| NOTE: BEFORE YOU READ THIS I EDITED THE NOVEL. THE "ARCANES" ARE NOW KNOWN AS "ARCANIANS" THAT ARE THE ORIGINAL RESIDENTS OF THE PLANET "ARCANE". Enjoy. Read. Respond. Comment. Please inform me of my mistakes/typos/errors. Thank you in advance.
Prologue
They’ve finally done it. The humans finally managed to squeeze every resource out of Earth and brought Mother Nature to extinction. Do they take responsibility for their own actions? No. Do they receive retribution and let their lord seal their fate? No. In fact they just move right on to another planet. Just one human was able to bring upon the death of us. I’ll never forget his name. Connor. He came into our planet informing us his planet was dying and claimed he wanted to make an alliance, to form a utopia with both our planets. He showered us with gifts and kindness. His idea of a “utopia” was soon turned into our end. Not even three months after he visited the humans returned with warships. Guns rained upon us. Our women and children fled for safety and our men fought but our effort was useless. As soon as we thought it was over the humans evacuated their warships onto our planet and started to kill, ****, and torture our race. The suffering never ended. This is what the humans might as well call the “apocalypse”.
Only very few of us survived one of them including my father. He married a human woman and she gave birth to me and my sister. I asked my father why he would marry an individual from a race that destroyed us he said, “Because Connor was a great man. I’ve known him personally and I’ve worked with him. He did believe in that utopia. I could always see his eyes light up whenever he would talk about the idea. He even opposed what his race did to us and fought along our side. I believe he did want that utopia. I believe he did want all of us to get along and celebrate. That is why I married your mother. This brings us one step closer to what he wanted to accomplish. And this is why I named you Connor as well.”
But that was back when I was seven. My father is dead now. He was killed brutally by a human who opposed our race. Why do they oppose us so much? We’re not much different. We basically look the same. The eyes, the mouth, the body, everything and not to mention we also reproduce the same! I can’t escape the images of the rapes I’ve seen done on our women. Why do they hate us so much? “They hate us because we’ve been gifted something special that no humans could ever have. We’re one with nature. We work with nature while humans just use it.” That was my father’s response.
My parents sent me to a human school all throughout my life. I’ve associated with humans more than I was supposed to. I’ve also associated with a few of our race, the Arcanians or what the humans call us “aliens”. I’ve learned the term “alien” means it is something or someone that is foreign to something or somewhere and doesn’t belong there. The humans are the aliens from the way I see it. I’ve also studied on how the humans view us. Whenever I would bring up the topic of my race the children in the class would just call us savage creatures that deserved this sort of suffering. According to the humans we’ve destroyed their first spaceship that landed on our planet and killed Connor. It wouldn’t take a genius to figure out the human’s media was giving them misinformation about everything that happened. Connor’s ship crashed onto our planet and we brought him in for hospitality. Unfortunately he lost contact with his mother ship so my father’s crew had to contact it. It turns out the mother ship has been hit by an asteroid and the ship was destroyed. When we finally managed to contact a ship it was their warship. It wouldn’t answer back even with Connor at the radio but instead decided to wipe out my home.
“Dad, we all look the same. How do humans know if I am an Arcanian?” I asked my father once when I was five. He answered, “They don’t. That’s why humans don’t try to look for us anymore. They think we’re gone. But you’re special son, you’re half Arcanian and half human. That makes you a hybrid.”
Chapter 1
“Sweetie come sit down I’ve made you lunch.” My mother answered as I stepped into the house. I knew that smell. It was father’s favorite. I turned my head towards the calendar and glanced at date. June, 18, 3045. It’s the tenth anniversary since my father’s death and I still feel a part of him in me. I sat down next to my sister, Alana, named after my mother and began to eat. The news was on and I was examining every little detail of it. I’m still surprised I still watch the news. Everyday’s always the same. It’s always filled with mass murder, ****, theft, and corruption, everything that makes up a human. I took a bite of my food. “Oh dear.” Mother gasped as it went to one newscast. I looked back up due to curiosity and I couldn’t believe what I saw. I’ve seen mass murder but nothing like this.
The crime scene on the news was just huge and it was just two miles away. There were fourteen slain bodies and all of them were women. They weren’t even mutilated or bruised. They were just lying there, lifeless. The news report claimed it was a series of internal bleeding that killed them. Fourteen dead bodies and the cause was internal bleeding? This can’t be normal. I finished my dinner, said farewell to my mother and Alana and darted straight to the crime scene. When I arrived there were still police lines surrounding the perimeter but it seems everyone left the area. I walked inside the police line after scanning for any spectators or officials and decided to carefully search the area for a clue to the person might have done this. Humans aren’t this… sly in their art of killing. It’s always mutilation or gun shots. I began to turn and walk away until my eye caught something in the bushes. The authorities missed something. Typical humans. I carefully approached it and reached into the bushes to get a hold of it. The feeling was cold. I pulled the thing out and I backed up in horror. What was lying there was a dead woman, naked, with cuts and bruises all over her body. The cuts and bruises are probably from the bushes. What caught my attention were the hand prints on the back and the hip of the corpse. I decided to leave before anyone comes along.
When I got home I started doing research about the scene and the words of my father kept repeating in my head like a broken record. “We’ve been gifted something special that no humans can ever have.” Was this the gift? Were we given the gift of murder? The manslaughter actually took place two days ago. That’s all the information I was able to get because the case is still under investigation. That’s superb. The authorities are still investigating this when I already know the truth. I still can’t grasp the fact an Arcanian did this. We’re supposed to be valiant. The humans are the savages. They’re the ones that brutally kill, not us. I need some answers and I know that I have to find the murderer to get the answers. But father told me that we all looked alike. So how am I supposed to know who’s human and who’s an Arcane? Father… I wish you were here to give me some answers…
Chapter 2
The next morning I woke up still searching for answers. It was a Saturday so I had the whole day to figure out who the serial killer was and to put an end to this. After breakfast I immediately set out, my destination was the crime scene. When I arrived cops had the area surrounded again but this time, in awe of a “new” body. “Crap, maybe I should’ve covered my tracks better.” I muttered to myself while blending in with the crowd.
“Hey, you!” An officer called out.
“Me?” I answered walking towards the officer.
“Yes, you. Were you here yesterday?”
My heart skipped a beat. I swear I checked and double checked if there were any people around. “No.” I answered bluntly.
“Really? Some witnesses said they saw someone who looked just like you here yesterday.”
“I’m sorry officer but I wasn’t here yesterday.”
“Well the sources said otherwise.”
“I don’t know what sources you have but they’re extremely inaccurate. I’m not sure what you’re trying to do here but questioning random pedestrians who are just walking by seems pretty pointless. And I’m also quite surprised out of the big handful people who are here you would just choose me to interview. Tell me officer, are you oppressing a certain type of people?”
“Get the hell out of here chink.” He barked storming off.
“That was a close one.” I sighed under my breath.
I started to go back home because I’ve hit another dead end in this case. If I want to really find out whose behind this I’ll need to avoid the authorities and keep out of their sight. I stepped onto my front porch when my mother bolted out of the house.
“Alana’s in the hospital! Something’s happened to her!” She cried. “Quick we have to get there right away!”
I could feel beads of cold sweat rushing down my body. I froze paralyzed for a few seconds but eventually managed to move. We both got into the car and ten minutes later we got to the hospital due to my mother speeding. I rushed out and darted to the front desk.
“Alana Xing!” I screamed out. The front desk looked at me like I’ve just gotten out of the insane asylum. One reached for the microphone to the loudspeaker when my mother caught up.
“Alana Xing, we’re here for Alana Xing. I’m her mother and this is her brother.” My mother spoke calmly. I stared at her. How could she remain so calm in a dire situation?
“May we see some ID please? It’s for the security of the patient if you don’t mind.” The nurse replied with a professional tone.
“Of course.” My mother handed her driver license and my passport. The nurse checked and validated it then returned it. She led us to the room where Alana was and when I walked in I stood in shock and was struck with grief. She had a handprint on her left arm. I collapsed and I think the paramedics were about to send me a wheelchair but my mother help me back up. I walked over to see Alana lying weak and helpless. I took her left hand, gripped it tight and said “I swear I will get whoever did this.” A stream of tear rolled down my cheeks but I quickly wiped them away.
“She’ll be okay.” My mother said trying to comfort me in a soft tone.
“I hope.” I muttered and I walked out of the room.
I know she won’t be okay. It was the same handprint that was left on the other victims. The same size, the same finger length, everything was the same. Why did it go after Alana? What purpose did that person have? Whatever purpose it has I swear I will stop it on any circumstances, even if it means breaking the law. After I stopped walking I looked out the window to see the sun spilling its rays on the world, the world the humans have taken over. The world use to be peaceful before the humans came. The world was an actual utopia according to my father’s stories. The humans swarmed in like locusts and claimed what wasn’t theirs. They forced us to turn against each other and commit treacherous acts on one another, Alana being a prime example. And curse the day I was born because I will have to be the one to contradict my principles just to set things right. Whoever did this to Alana must bid farewell to this world.
“You son of a bitch now it’s personal.” |
